Berry, berry, berry!

This coffee is produced by small holders of the Bamasaba tribe in Kikobero Village. They live and farm on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the east of Uganda. Farming is their way of life, producing bananas, corn, beans and cotton. But the fertile soil of the non-active volcano does also well for coffee plants.

A little piece of history: one of the interesting coffee varieties the Bamasaba are growing is called Nyasaland. Nyasaland is one of the oldest arabica varieties introduced to Africa. After a long journey of the arabica coffee seed, typica, traveling from Ethiopia to Europe, Central America and Jamaica. The seeds where brought back to Nyasaland (now Malawi) in 1878 where the coffee industry was booming. After time the heat and dry climate in Malawi caused coffee plant deceases with low yields for farmers resulting in the abandonment of coffee. Nyasaland was thereafter taken from Malawi to Uganda in 1910 where it flourished again.

This natural processed lot stood out for us because of its floral and berry-like flavour.
